About Autism

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder of development that lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. Most children with Autism have trouble with social skills, communication, and have developmental delays. There is no cure for Autism and no one knows what causes it! * In 1994, 1 in 2,500 children were affected by Autism. * In 1999, the stats were 1 in 500. * In 2005, the numbers rose to 1 in 166 children. *Right now 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with Autism! That means a child is diagnosed every 20 minutes! *Boys are 4 times more likely to have Autism than girls.  Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the  United States.  It is more prevalent among children than juvenile diabetes, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis or childhood cancer. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control declared that Autism was at epidemic proportions. More than a disorder, Autism is a national health crisis affecting at least one million Americans and costing the country more than $90 billion annually. These stats are staggering yet; most people don’t know anything about Autism except maybe what they saw in the movie Rainman.  This by the way is an extreme misconception.  Most people with Autism do not have the talents that Raymond Babbitt had in the movie.
